GM microvan venture to sell its 1st MPV this year
SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., General Motors' microvan venture, will start selling its first multipurpose vehicle model in the second half of this year to strengthen its presence in the domestic passenger vehicle market.
The seven-seat vehicle, the Baojun 730, was launched last month at the Beijing auto show. It is powered by a 1.5- or 1.8-liter gasoline engine and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. It was developed on an all-new vehicle platform, the company said.
At the Beijing auto show, SAIC-GM-Wuling also launched sales of its third sedan model, the Baojun 610. The car, powered by a GM-supplied 1.5-liter gasoline engine with dynamic variable valve timing, has a starting price of 65,800 yuan ($10,539).
SAIC-GM-Wuling, in the southwest China city of Liuzhou, is a three-way joint venture among GM, SAIC Motor Corp. and the Liuzhou government.
It is China's largest manufacturer of microvans -- vehicles mainly used in rural areas to transport people and goods. In 2011, the company launched sales of its first sedan model, the Baojun 630 compact car.
Last year, SAIC-GM-Wuling sold about 150 Wuling-badged microvans and 100,000 Baojun-brand cars.
