JCI to supply stop-start batteries to SAIC

Johnson Controls Inc. says it has signed a long-term contract to supply absorbent glass mat batteries for stop-start systems to be used by SAIC Motor Corp.

SAIC will install the stop-start systems in vehicles produced for its Roewe and MG brands, the U.S. supplier said.

Further details about the supply contract are unavailable.

Johnson Controls sells more than 5 million absorbent glass mat batteries worldwide each year. Absorbent glass mat batteries are lead-acid batteries in which mats of glass fibers are sandwiched between lead plates. Because the glass fibers soak up the batteries' electrolyte fluid, the batteries won't spill, even if damaged.

By 2018, Johnson Controls expects 40 percent of new cars produced globally each year to have start-stop systems.

The company says it plans to increase output to support demand in North America, Europe and China.

Johnson Controls, of Milwaukee, ranks No. 6 on the Automotive News list of the top 100 global suppliers with worldwide parts sales to automakers of $22.52 billion in fiscal 2012.

SAIC, of Shanghai, has joint ventures with General Motors and the Volkswagen Group.
