Webasto producing sunroofs for China-built VW Golf
Webasto Group of Germany says its factory in Guangzhou is producing polycarbonate sunroofs for the VW Golf built in Volkswagen's Foshan assembly plant.
The German supplier says it is shipping polycarbonate panels from Germany to Guangzhou, where the company fabricates panorama roofs for the Golf.
Webasto says it has invested 45 million euros (376 million yuan) to develop polycarbonate roof panels. Polycarbonate is increasingly popular because it is 50 percent lighter than glass.
The technology is catching on in China, a fast-growing market for sunroofs. According to Webasto, one out of three vehicles built in China has a sunroof or panorama roof.
Last year, Webasto generated sales of 4.1 billion yuan in China.
In November, the company opened a plant in Chongqing, and in 2014 it will open factories in Wuhan and Shenyang. When those facilities launch production, Webasto will have 10 sunroof plants in China.
