Key Safety introduces inflatable seat belt in China
Key Safety Systems is introducing its rear-seat inflatable seat belt -- dubbed Inflatabelt -- in China.
The belt, which is a combination seat belt and airbag, reduces the risk of injury by spreading the impact of a collision across a wider area on the chest.
U.S. supplier Key Safety first introduced the device on a 2011-model Ford Explorer, and currently markets it in North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
The company did not indicate whether it has any customers in China for Inflatabelt.
In August, a plant built by Key Safety near Beijing launched production of steering wheels and other components. The company also is building a new 50,000-square-meter factory in Shanghai, where it also has a technical center.
The company has not indicated whether either factory will produce the Inflatabelt.
Key Safety is based in suburban Detroit. The company says China is its fastest-growing market.
