Taiwanese NB PC Makers See Revenue Rebound in March

Rallying back from seasonal recession, most Taiwanese notebook PC manufacturers saw their sales revenues rebound in March from February.

Among them, Quanta Computer Inc., one of the world's top two makers of its kind, scored combined revenue of NT$114.568 billion in March, up 90.7% month-on-month or 24.1% year-on-year to hit a new high, and shipped 5.7 million notebook PCs, 78% more than a month earlier. The firm's aggregate revenue for the first quarter of this year amounted to NT$251.29 billion, slightly up 1.99% from the same period of last year.

Gaining solid momentum from steadily growing notebook PC shipments and new products such as cloud computing-based devices, Quanta chairman Barry Lam noted that his firm is likely to witness full-year revenue break the NT$1 trillion mark this year.

Coincidentally, Asustek Computer Inc. also scored a 70.4% monthly growth in sales revenue of NT$24.248 billion for March, due mainly to its launch of Sandy Bridge chipset-incorporated devices. Totally, the firm shipped 5.3 million units of motherboards and 2.8 million notebook PCs during the first quarter of this year.

Eroded by tablet PCs, the firm, however, admitted that its shipment of netbook PCs declined to less than 1.4 million units in the first quarter, with its ASP (average selling price) of such devices trending downward continuously.

Acer Inc. raked in NT$40.753 billion in sales revenue for March, up 45% from February to hit a six-month high but down 8.27% from a year earlier, with first-quarter revenue dropping about 9.5% to NT$102.17 billion year-on-year.

In the meantime, Pegatron Corp. also enjoyed a monthly growth of over 70% in combined revenue of NT$33.78 billion for March, and finished the first quarter with a quarterly revenue of NT$82.93 billion, shrinking 20% from a quarter earlier.
