Toyota, Nissan post double-digit gains
China vehicle sales of Toyota Motor Corp. and its two local joint-venture partners rose more than 12 percent in April from a year earlier, to 85,800 units, the automaker said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Nissan Motor Corp. said its local joint venture's sales in China rose 15 percent last month from a year earlier, to 118,500 units.
Toyota's increase followed a 19 percent year-on-year rise in March and a 43 percent rise in February.
In the first four months of the year, Japan's biggest automaker's sales in China are up 20 percent from a year earlier, to 313,800 vehicles.
Nissan's sales through the first four months are up 19 percent, to 401,600 vehicles.
Nissan, which operates a joint venture in China with Dongfeng Motor Corp., aims to sell 1.4 million cars in the country this year, up 11 percent from a year earlier.
Toyota aims to sell more than 1.1 million vehicles in China this year, a goal it had originally set for 2010.
Last month, Toyota Executive Vice President Yasumori Ihara said the automaker aims to double annual sales in China to 2 million vehicles over the long term. But he gave no time frame for the goal.
Last year, Toyota sold 917,500 vehicles in China.
