Nissan to invest 100 bln yen on vehicles for China, India
The planned output of 600,000 units a year is the equivalent of nearly 20 pct of Nissan's global sales
TOKYO (AFX) -Nissan Motor Co intends to develop a global strategic vehicle targeted at China, India and other emerging markets, with more than 100 bln yen to be invested in capacity of some 600,000 units a year in these markets by 2009, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, without citing sources.
The business daily said Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co, its China-based affiliate, will add a production line capable of turning out 100,000 vehicles a year. In India and Brazil, Nissan is considering using excess capacity at plants operated by its largest shareholder, Renault SA of France. The strategic vehicle will also be produced in Eastern Europe, according to the report.
With an engine displacement of around 1 liter, the low-priced strategic car will be among the smallest developed by Nissan. It will likely sell for some 10,000 usd. The firm has already started developing a chassis, the Nihon Keizai said.
