China's vehicle imports reach record high
China's monthly passenger vehicle imports reached a record high of 114,800 units in May, according to China Automobile Trading Co., China's largest dealer of imported vehicles.
The figure, representing a surge of 52 percent year-on-year, includes 48,200 cars, 61,100 SUVs and 5,500 MPVs.
Luxury brands account for a large portion of China's imports, according to China Automobile.
In May, BMW AG, Mercedes-Benz, Audi AG and Lexus imported 50,630 units, or 44 percent of China's total vehicle imports.
In the first five months, China's passenger vehicle imports totaled 479,000 units, up 28 percent year-on-year.
In contrast, China's total vehicle exports rose 29 percent year-on-year to 382,500 units in the first five months of this year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
