U.S. school bus maker to build plant in China

Blue Bird Corp., a U.S. school bus maker, plans to build an assembly plant with Xiamen Fentai Bus & Coach Co., a Chinese company, in the east China city of Xiamen.

Last week, a Blue Bird delegation led by CEO Phil Horlock held talks in Xiamen with local government officials and executives of Xiamen Fentai, according to Xiamen's government.

After the meeting, the U.S. company said it wants to partner with Xiamen Fentai to build a plant in the city's Haichang district. The plant would produce up to 20,000 school buses a year.

Further details on the plant are not available.

In December, a makeshift school bus crashed into a truck in the northwest China's Gansu province, killing more than 20 kindergarteners.

The accident prompted the Chinese government to enact strict safety requirements for school buses. This has created demand for safe, well-built school buses.
