Chery, SK Telecom set up telematics lab in China
Chery Automobile Co. has built a laboratory with South Korea's SK Telecom Co. to develop a telematics service for Chery's vehicles, reports Korea's Yonhap news service, citing the automaker.
The two companies have spent three years preparing to launch their telematics venture, according to Yonhap.
"We seek to develop smart vehicles that will enable mobile phone-controlled driving, using the top South Korean telecom operator's technology," said Chen Anning, vice general manager of Chery Automobile.
SK Telecom is South Korea's largest wireless telecommunications provider. The company entered China in 2000, and in 2006 it agreed to help develop China's mobile telecommunications standards.
Chery Automobile is headquartered in Wuhu, in Anhui province. In the first 11 months of 2011, the government-owned automaker sold 578,400 light vehicles, according to LMC Automotive.
