Scania Improves Its Product Development with Support from Dassault Systèmes’ PLM Solutions

Dassault Systèmes (DS) announced that Scania, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks and buses, has integrated production design, product development, processes and manufacturing using Dassault Systèmes PLM solutions. Scania creates full scale 3D models with Dassault Systèmes’ CATIA and ENOVIA, encompassing everything from design evaluation and virtual manufacturing to marketing material.

Employing 32,000 people, Scania operates in about 100 countries. About 2,400 employees work with research and development, a majority of these are based in Sweden, close to the production units.

Scania has evaluated different CAD systems with the objective to reduce time and costs significantly in order to develop, produce and improve their products and product descriptions. After reviewing different CAD systems Scania decided that CATIA was the best one.

“We realized that CATIA was still the best authoring solution for us. One of the key reasons was our previous Dassault Systèmes experience as a supplier,” says Anders G. Lindberg, technology manager, R&D, Scania.

Today, approximately 650 employees use CATIA and ENOVIA at Scania, primarily within R&D and production, but also in other areas, such as post-market. Today, the 3D environment is a naturally integrated part of a designer’s workday.

“The biggest difference for the user today is that we have a platform where we can construct in 3D from the start and make cross functional use in a whole new way. We also have other possibilities for parametric design, optimization tools and kinematics compared to our previous solution,” says Lindberg.

Design decisions can quickly be adjusted to the right solution with CATIA. For example, an incorrect choice of line mounting in hydraulic, cooler, fuel and brake systems can be avoided by rules in the system. All information is collected and made reusable in future development projects.

Scania’s collaboration with its supply chain has also been simplified. Scania has developed a data exchange solution built on ENOVIA that makes it possible for users to retrieve, convert, share and import data with suppliers – not just drawings, but also complete 3D models in different standard formats.
