Shanghai wants fleet of 20,000 EVs by 2012

The city of Shanghai aims to have 20,000 electric vehicles in operation and will build 25,000 charging stations in the city by the end of 2012, said an official in charge of promoting alternative-energy vehicles.

Shanghai also plans to offer subsidies of as much as 50,000 yuan ($7,370) for electric vehicles and 20,000 yuan for hybrids, said the official from Shanghai's alternative energy vehicle promotion office at an automotive forum organized by Ping An Securities Co.

He didn't give a timeframe. He also did not indicate the likely percentages of retail, company and government-owned vehicles that would comprise the 20,000-unit EV fleet.

China's central government already subsidizes the purchase of energy-efficient cars, and may invest more than 100 billion yuan to encourage development of alternative-energy vehicles over the next 10 years, according to the Shanghai Securities News.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology outlined its spending proposal in a draft plan that it will submit to the State Council this month for approval, the newspaper reported.
