Quanta Computers to build base in Chongqing

Quanta Computers, the world's largest notebook computer manufacturer signed a contract for its third manufacturing base in Chinese Mainland January 18, indicating another IT giant following Hewlett Packard, Foxconn, CISCO and Inventec to make arrangements for its presence in Chongqing.

A senior manager from Quanta stated in Chongqing, that Quanta had only 2 manufacturing bases in Chinese Mainland during the past decade and was reluctant to build a third one. After careful evaluation, the company now holds that Chongqing has great potential for future development because it is the only municipality directly under the central government in western China. At the same time, Quanta is making arrangements for the purpose of coping with its important partners' similar efforts.

According to Huang Qifan, acting mayor of Chongqing, the joint efforts of Quanta and Chongqing Municipal Government to build Quanta's third base in Chinese Mainland will help Chongqing introduce a notebook computer project cluster, realize a leap-forward in the development of the IT industry, speed up the strategic transformation of the local economy and create an IT-related miracle in western China.

Not long ago, Chongqing Municipal Government vowed to increase its notebook computer production capacity to 50 million units per year in 5 years. However, due to Quanta's presence, Chongqing Municipal Government has adjusted the goal to 80 million units per year, turning Chongqing into the largest notebook computer manufacturing base in Asia and even the world.

Quanta Computers was founded by Barry Lam in 1988. It has now become one of the world's top 500 electronics enterprises mainly manufacturing notebook computers for international giants such as Sony, Toshiba and HP. Quanta is the world's largest notebook computer designer and manufacturer.
