Chinas power demand to grow 13.4 pct in 2005 NDRC

China's power demand growth is expected to reach 13.4 pct this year with power shortages to ease in the second half.

China's power demand growth is expected to reach 13.4 pct this year with power shortages to ease in the second half, Hu Weiping, director of the Energy Bureau of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said.

"2005 will be another high growth year for power demand," Hu said at a conference in Beijing

"Demand will continue to be strong for a long time," he added

Power demand grew 14.8 pct growth in 2004

Hu said China added 18 kW of installed capacity in the first half and said another 14 mln kW will be added in the second half

China's installed power generating capacity will reach 517 mln kilowatts by the end of this year

"China has approved projects totaling 195 mln kW, almost 50 pct of the installed capacity," Hu said

He said China has responded better to supply this year with power shortages expected to ease in the second half. Last year China's power shortages reached 35 mln kW

However he said he did not expect China's transportation bottlenecks to ease any time soon

"Resolving the transport bottlenecks is nearly impossible," he said. "The problem will exist for a considerable time," he added

Responding to questions about China's recent move to shut down small, powerextensive polluting plants, Hu said plants representing a total of 17 mln kW have been officially asked to close

"Another 30 mln kW will also be shut down (by local governments)," Hu said

Yesterday the NDRC ordered Guangdong province to shut down more than half of its dieselfired power plants

Zhang Guobao, the viceminister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said at the same conference that the State Council had approved a plan to close small diesel plants with an aggregate 5,000 megawatts in generation capacity.
