Ford deliveries slump 37% in 2018 on dismal car demand
Ford Motor Co.’s deliveries in China last year plunged 37 percent from a year earlier to 752,243.
Leading the company’s sales slump was its passenger vehicle joint venture in China, Changan Ford, which builds and markets Ford brand sedans and crossovers.
In 2018, Changan Ford’s deliveries tumbled 50 percent to 417,215 as most of its models neared the end of their product cycle, Ford said.
Sales at Jiangling Motors Corp., Ford’s truck partnership, dropped 9.9 percent to 263,582. Jiangling Motors produces and distributes trucks for Ford and JMC brands.
Deliveries of imported Ford models also fell 14 percent to 16,131. The number includes nearly 3,200 Mustang muscle cars and 2,500 F-150 Raptor pickups.
Despite the sales slowdown, Lincoln’s 2018 sales in China rose 2.2 percent to 55,315.
Ford is seeking to revive China sales by speeding the introduction of new models.
In November, the company launched sales of the redesigned Ford Focus and Escort sedans in China.
This month, the U.S. automaker plans to put on sale the Territory, the first entry-level, midsize SUV the Ford brand has developed for China. The vehicle is assembled at Jiangling Motors.
Lincoln plans to roll out one locally produced model in China each year from 2019 to 2021 to expand its share of the local luxury vehicle market.
