Huawei's cooperation with the US-based giant will help China's biggest private telecom equipment maker get more market share in developed countries, where Chinese telecom firms have little impact, industry insiders said.
Both sides will co-develop UMTS (universal mobile telecommunication system) technology that is used in both current and next generation networks.
At present, Chinese telecom firms face non-trade barriers when trying to tap Western markets. With a strong partner, Huawei can expand quicker.
Huawei's overseas revenue is expected to hit US$4.6 billion in 2006, 34 percent growth year on year. Still, most of that growth is from developing markets in Africa and Asia.
