Schaeffler localizes key component output to speed CVT assembly, deliveries
Schaeffler Group added a production line for chains used in continuously variable transmissions at a plant in the east China city of Suzhou.
The German supplier previously imported the chains from Germany to China. Local production allows faster delivery of locally assembled CVTs to SAIC-General Motors and other clients, Schaeffler said.
SAIC-GM, a passenger vehicle joint venture between SAIC Motor Corp. and GM, assembles Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac models.
The new production line, launched last week, can make 290,000 CVT chains a year. Schaeffler said it plans to expand the line’s annual output to 675,000 chains in the near future.
Schaeffler, of Herzogenaurach, Germany, makes engine, transmission and chassis components as well as bearings for auto, aircraft and other industrial sectors.
The German supplier has some 13,000 employees in China and operates eight plants across the country as well as an r&d center in Shanghai.
