China takes lead in EV deployment, according to new measure
China, once lagging in electrified-vehicle deployment, has become a global leader, according to a new yardstick created by consulting firm AlixPartners.
In the company's Automotive Electrification Index, a country's "e-range" is calculated by multiplying the number of electric vehicles sold by the electric range of those vehicles.
The Greater China region sold 14 million miles worth of electric range in the second quarter of this year.
By comparison:
Europe: 7.83 million miles
North America: 6.15 million miles
Japan and South Korea: 1.29 million miles
In the first quarter of 2013, China was last globally, with 223,700 miles sold.
They're not "first by a little bit, they're first by a lot," said Mark Wakefield, a consultant with AlixPartners, at the Technology in Motion conference in Detroit. "They're selling long-range vehicles, and they're selling a lot of them."
To calculate e-range, the new index uses publicly available data about vehicle ranges, volume sold and market share. Plug-in electric vehicles are measured solely by range of battery capacity, biasing the metric toward longer-range full EVs. Hybrids are not included.
"We're normalizing it to the [internal combustion engine] experience," Wakefield said. "A 300-plus mile range basically meets everybody's needs."
In comparing companies, five Chinese automakers made the Top Ten list of miles sold in the second quarter: BYD Auto Co., BAIC Motor Corp., Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ninghai Zhidou Electric Vehicles Co. and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co.
