SAIC-GM-Wuling venture opens Indonesia assembly plant

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., a producer of inexpensive minibuses and entry-level vehicles, opened an assembly plant in Indonesia last week to gain a foothold in Southeast Asia.

The joint venture’s $700 million (4.7 billion yuan) factory is in Cikarang, a city in West Java in Indonesia. The plant will assemble up to 120,000 vehicles a year at full capacity, according to SAIC.

It is the first assembly plant established in Indonesia by a Chinese automaker.

The factory’s first product is a compact multi-purpose vehicle, the Confero S, which will be marketed under the Wuling brand. The right-hand drive MPV is adapted from the Wuling Hong Guang, SAIC-GM-Wuling’s top-selling model in China.

The Cikarang plant initially will supply the Indonesian market. In the future, it will export products to other Southeast Asian countries, according to SAIC.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, incorporated in the southwest China city of Liuzhou, is a 50.1-44-5.9 partnership among SAIC Motor Corp., General Motors and the Liuzhou government.

The partnership produces Wuling microvans and compact MPVs as well as Baojun-brand passenger vehicles.
