Jaguar to build E-Pace compact crossover at Chery joint venture plant

Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to launch production of the all-wheel-drive Jaguar E-Pace in China this year to meet local market demand for compact crossovers.

The five-seater will be assembled at the automaker’s joint venture with Chery Automobile Co. in the east China city of Changshu. It will go on sale in 2018 and is Jaguar’s second light truck after the F-Pace.

The E-Pace is powered by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine available in 246- and 296-hp variants. Both are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and awd is standard.

The E-Pace will be the fourth vehicle built by the partnership, following the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the long-wheelbase Jaguar XFL.

The E-Pace was designed and engineered in the United Kingdom. According to Jaguar Land Rover, the light truck will also be produced in Austria under contract by Magna Steyr.

In June, Jaguar Land Rover’s China sales surged 65 percent year on year to 12,004. The three locally produced models generated 58 percent of sales.

The U.K. automaker hasn’t released China sales results for the first six months.
