Contemporary Amperex to supply batteries for NEVS electric vehicles
National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the Chinese-owned successor to Saab, has signed an agreement to buy lithium ion batteries from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.
The batteries will be used to power electric vehicles built on the Saab 9-3 platform. In a Feb. 28 press release, NEVS offered details of its deal with Contemporary Amperex. The batteries will power 250,000 vehicles to be produced by NEVS for Panda New Energy, a Beijing leasing company.
The battery maker's "supply capacity and proven technology will allow us to shorten the lead time to the market, fulfilling both our demand in quantity and quality," said NEVS Chairman Kai Johan Jiang.
In January, China's National Development Reform Commission authorized NEVS to manufacture EVs in China.
An assembly plant in Fujian has begun to produce NEVS' first batch of 100,000 EVs. A factory under construction in the northeast city of Tianjin, scheduled to open next year, is to produce 150,000 vehicles.
Contemporary Amperex is headquartered in the east China city of Ningde. The company, which was launched in 2011, employs 10,000 workers.
NEVS is owned by NME Holdings, Tianjin Bin Hai Hi-tech Industrial Development Area and State Research Information Technology Co.
The company is headquartered in Trollhattan, Sweden, where Saab's former headquarters and assembly plant are. In 2012, NEVS acquired the assets of the bankrupt Swedish automaker. The Trollhattan factory has been closed.
