Chinese researchers target hydrogen fuel cells
Two Chinese research institutes are teaming with a German company to develop fuel cells in Dalian, reports the China Daily.
The Dalian Hydrogen Energy Research Institute will team with the Dalian Metal Surface Coating Research Institute to develop, produce and sell hydrogen fuel cells, according to the state-owned newspaper.
The two institutes also will work with e.m.t. GmbH Energy & Material Technologies, which has expertise in fuel cell stacks.
Christian Erdmann, chief executive of the German company, cautioned that the technology may require 10 to 15 years of development before it's ready for commercialization.
Chinese automakers have steered clear of fuel cells despite generous government sales subsidies. Domestic automakers have opted to develop battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids instead.
Local Dalian officials are counting on the project to create a major r&d hub in the city. An international hydrogen symposium will be held in May in Dalian.
