GM venture launches MPV for businesses

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., China's largest microvan producer, launched its first commercial multipurpose vehicle last week.

The Wuling Zhengcheng will come in a seven-seat version with a starting price of 66,000 yuan ($10,728) and a nine-seat version with a starting price of 66,200 yuan.

The two versions are the same size. The Zhengcheng is the largest vehicle ever launched by the company, at 5,090 mm (200.4 inches) long, 1,780 mm wide and 1,925 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm.

The Zhengcheng is powered by a 1.5-liter or 1.8-liter gasoline engine combined with a five-speed manual transmission.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, a three-way joint venture among SAIC Motor Corp., General Motors and the Liuzhou government in southwest China's Guangxi region, derives most of its sales from commercial microvans.

The company recently introduced a line of sedans and MPVs under the new Baojun brand, which is aimed at retail customers. The Zhengcheng extends the Wuling brand for commercial customers into the expanding MPV segment.

Through the first 11 months of this year, the company sold 1,639,682 microvans, sedans and MPVs, up 12 percent from the same period last year.
