Nissan volume falls 20%, extending slump

Nissan Motor Corp.'s Chinese joint venture sold 93,700 automobiles in September, down 20 percent from a year earlier.

SHANGHAI -- Nissan Motor Corp.'s Chinese joint venture sold 93,700 automobiles in September, down 20 percent from a year earlier.

That follows a 1 percent year-on-year decrease in August and a 12 percent drop in July.

The company, in a statement, attributed the decline to sluggish sales of light commercial vehicles and increased competition in the passenger car market.

In the first nine months, Nissan sold 879,100 vehicles, an increase of 5 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Japanese automakers have produced mixed sales results in China this year. Toyota Motor Corp. sold 56,880 vehicles in China last month, up 26 percent.

But Honda Motor Co. said its sales fell 23 percent to 56,880 units. Honda's sales declined 3 percent in August and 2 percent in July.

Nissan, which operates a joint venture in China with Dongfeng Motor Group Co., aims to sell 1.4 million cars in the country this year, up 10.6 percent from a year earlier.

Nissan Senior Vice President Jun Seki said in May that the company aims to achieve annual China sales of 2 million cars by 2017 or 2018 as it bolsters business in the world's largest car market.
