Meanwhile, Porsche AG's September sales in China jumped 54 percent to 4,344 vehicles.
Mercedes' sales for the first nine months of the year increased nearly 31 percent to 203,485. Over that same period, deliveries of the stretched E class soared 76 percent.
Through September, China has been Mercedes' second-largest market, behind the United States. Mercedes expects China will become its biggest market sometime in 2015.
To expand sales, Mercedes is opening 100 dealerships in China this year, raising its total to 440 outlets.
Porsche's sales for the first nine months of the year rose nearly 19 percent to 32,592.
Through September, the United States remains Porsche's largest market, but the company's sales in China exceeded its U.S. deliveries in September. Porsche appears likely to top its goal of a 10 percent sales increase this year.
To boost sales, Porsche introduced its Macan crossover, and the company is expanding its Chinese dealership network to 85 outlets this year, up from 68 stores in June.
