VW brand sales in China up 4.3% in September

Volkswagen-brand sales in China edged up 4.3 percent year-on-year in September to 240,000 units as the German automaker was unable to maintain the strong sales pace set earlier this year.

WOLFSBURG, Germany -- Volkswagen-brand sales in China edged up 4.3 percent year-on-year in September to 240,000 units as the German automaker was unable to maintain the strong sales pace set earlier this year.

For the first nine months, VW-brand sales in China and Hong Kong rose 15.3 percent.

Volkswagen has not yet released combined sales of all its brands in China. So far, Audi has reported that sales rose 13 percent in September, while Skoda deliveries increased 16 percent.

All year, Volkswagen and rival General Motors have been locked in a contest to claim bragging rights as China's top-selling foreign automaker. Both companies are investing heavily in new production capacity.

This summer, VW announced it would spend 2 billion euros (15.8 billion yuan) to build two assembly plants in the east China port city of Qingdao and the northeast China port city of Tianjin.

Meanwhile, General Motors announced this month that it would spend $14.5 billion to build five new plants in China.
