BYD-Daimler EV venture starts China output
BYD Co.'s electric vehicle joint venture with Daimler AG has begun production of Denza brand vehicles in the south China city of Shenzhen.
Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co.'s Denza EV, a five-seat compact sedan, will go on sale late this month with a starting price of 369,000 yuan ($60,100). The car will qualify for 120,000 yuan in subsidies from China's central government and from local municipalities.
The EV features Daimler's engineering technology and is built according to the German luxury automaker's production processes. Its wheelbase matches that of the Mercedes-Benz E class, Daimler said.
The car is powered by BYD's lithium iron phosphate battery pack and has a range of 300 km (186 miles). It can be fully recharged in three hours using a dedicated charging station. It also can be recharged using a household power outlet.
The joint venture is targeting retail customers and fleet owners.
Denza will have its own dealership network.
