China's sales growth slows to 9% in August as sedans cool
China's light-vehicle sales growth slowed to 9 percent year on year in August due to weak sedan sales, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Light-vehicle sales in China had increased 10 percent year on year in July.
In August, automakers in China sold 1,468,200 light vehicles.
For the month, sedan sales rose only 1 percent from a year earlier to 910,800.
By contrast, SUV sales jumped 30 percent to 311,300 and multipurpose vehicle volume surged 38 percent to 145,900 in August. Microvan sales remained weak, dropping 8 percent last month to 100,200.
For the first eight months of this year, China's light-vehicle sales rose 11 percent from a year earlier to 12,459,500, thanks to robust SUV and MPV demand.
Among foreign automakers, August sales were mixed.
General Motors deliveries in China rose 14 percent to 280,178 and Ford sales increased 9 percent to 77,506.
But Japanese automakers struggled. Honda's China sales declined 6 percent to 52,513 while Nissan deliveries fell 1 percent to 85,500. Toyota Motor Corp. kept pace with industry sales, with a 9 percent increase to 78,500 vehicles.
German automakers have reported partial results for the month.
