Ford plans to launch 3 models, 2 factories in China in next 2 years
Ford Motor Co. plans to introduce the Ford Escort compact car and the Ford Mustang pony car in early 2015 and the Ford Everest midsize SUV in mid-2015 in China.
To support its expanding product lineup, Ford said it also will launch an assembly plant in the southwest China municipality of Chongqing late this year and another plant in the east China city of Hangzhou in 2015.
"We have experienced an unprecedented period of growth over the last few years," said Ford China CEO John Lawler. "We are confident that with our new assembly plants coming online in Chongqing and Hangzhou ... we will continue to attract new customers to the Ford brand."
Ford has two assembly plants in Chongqing.
Ford's sales in China, after soaring 30 percent annually for several years, have begun to settle down. In August, Ford and its two joint ventures sold 77,506 vehicles, up 9 percent year on year.
Sales of Changan Ford Automobile Co., Ford's passenger vehicle joint venture, increased 13 percent from a year earlier to 60,306 units last month. But Jiangling Motors Corp., Ford's commercial truck joint venture, reported a 2 percent drop in deliveries to 16,200 units.
Ford also imported some vehicles into China.
In the first eight months, Ford and its two joint ventures delivered 717,537 vehicles in China, up 30 percent from the same period last year.
