Ssangyong, Pang Da may form production joint venture in China
South Korean SUV maker Ssangyong Motors is considering a plan to build vehicles in China with Chinese vehicle distributor Pang Da Automobile Trade Co., Beijing Youth Daily reported.
Pang Da is Ssangyong's exclusive distributor in China. If Ssangyong's sales in China reach 50,000 vehicles by 2017, the company will discuss a production venture with Pang Da, the newspaper reported, citing an interview with Ssangyong CEO Lee Yoo-il.
Lee was in Beijing last week to renew his company's distribution contract with Pang Da for another three years.
In the first six months of this year, Ssangyong sold roughly 7,000 vehicles through Pang Da's dealerships, up 150 percent year on year. It aims to sell 21,000 vehicles in China this year, up from fewer than 10,000 in 2013.
Ssangyong sells six models in China: the Korando, Actyon, Rexton, Rodius, Kyron and Chairman. To support its sales growth, the Korean automaker plans to roll out a new model in China each year.
According to Beijing Youth Daily, Ssangyong plans to introduce a 1.6-liter-engine-powered compact SUV that might be named the X100.
To boost Ssangyong's sales in China, Pang Da plans to increase the number of Ssangyong dealerships to 180 by year end, up from 133 as of July.
