Dongfeng launches EV production
State-owned Dongfeng Motor Corp. launched mass production of its first electric car this month in the central China city of Wuhan.
The Aeolus E30 is fitted with a 25kW electric motor and iron-phosphate batteries. It has a range of 160 km and a maximum speed of 80 km per hour, according to Dongfeng.
The vehicle will be produced at Dongfeng's newly built plant in Wuhan. With a maximum capacity of 160,000 vehicles a year, the plant will produce both electric cars and gasoline-powered vehicles for Dongfeng's Aeolus brand.
Dongfeng is the latest state-owned Chinese automaker that has started EV production. Other state-owned automakers such as SAIC Motor Corp. and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. already produce electric cars.
Dongfeng's joint venture with Nissan Motor Corp. plans to start selling a rebadged Nissan Leaf electric car under the joint venture's Venucia brand in China in September this year.
Under Chinese regulations, electric vehicles built in China qualify for a government subsidy of 57,000 yuan ($9,120).
