Invista starts building Shanghai plants for airbag, carpet materials
Invista, a U.S. fiber maker, says it has begun building two plants in Shanghai to supply materials for airbags, carpet and other components.
In 2015, one plant is to start production of 150,000 tons of nylon polymers each year, and the other is to begin making 215,000 tons annually of hexamethylene diamine, an additive used to produce nylon and other materials.
The company also says it plans to build a plant to produce 300,000 tons annually of adiponitrile, an additive used mainly to produce nylon, but it did not give a timetable.
The company says its investment in the three plants will exceed $1 billion (6.23 billion yuan).
Invista also is building an r&d center for automotive carpet, IHS Automotive's Supplier Business newsletter reports. The center will test carpet for anti-stain properties, wear and tear and colorfastness.
Last year, Invista expanded its airbag fiber plant in Shanghai's Qingpu district.
In China, the company supplies Autoliv Inc., TRW Automotive, Hyundai Mobis and Jinzhou Jinheng Automotive Safety System Co.
