Mercedes sales advance 34% on E-class volume
Mercedes-Benz's sales in China and Hong Kong jumped 34 percent year-on-year to 24,937 units in March on strong demand for the long-wheelbase E-class sedan.
For the first three months of the year, Mercedes sales soared nearly 48 percent to 67,058 units.
Despite its strong growth, Mercedes-Benz trails well behind China's leading luxury brand, Audi. Last month, Audi sales rose 37 percent to 47,636 units.
To catch up to Audi, Daimler AG plans to spend 1 billion euros (8.6 billion yuan) to double the production capacity at its plant in Beijing.
Daimler and its joint-venture partner, Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp., will produce more than 200,000 units at their Beijing plant next year.
That assembly plant produces the Mercedes C-class sedan, the E-class sedan and the GLK SUV. Next year, it will begin producing the GLA compact crossover.
