VW China to develop EVs, fuel cells and plug-ins
Volkswagen Group will join its Chinese joint venture partners SAIC Motor Corp. and China FAW Group Corp. to develop vehicles powered by fuel cells and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The German automaker signed an agreement Friday with SAIC to develop fuel-cell technology and plug-in hybrids for the Chinese market, according to a statement from SAIC.
Volkswagen also will work with FAW to develop "a new, very eco-friendly vehicle in China," the German automaker said, without providing further details.
SAIC, of Shanghai, has developed a fuel-cell powered vehicle adapted from its mid-sized sedan, the Roewe 750. The state-owned automaker also has launched sales of a small electric sedan plus a plug-in hybrid built on the platform of the Roewe 550 compact car.
FAW, of Changchun, also is developing plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, which it has displayed at auto shows in China.
Last year, Volkswagen and its two joint ventures sold more than 3 million vehicles under the Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Porsche brands.
