Hunan Corun plans Shanghai battery plant
Hunan Corun New Energy Co., a private Chinese battery maker, plans to build a plant in Shanghai to make batteries for hybrid vehicles.
The company says its 50 million yuan ($8.1 million) plant, to be built in Shanghai's Minhang District, will make battery packs. Corun gave no further details.
Corun, established in 1998 and headquartered in the central China city of Changsha, makes nickel-metal hydride batteries. In China, it has plants in Changsha, Changde, Yiyang and Lanzhou.
It also owns a nickel-metal hydride battery plant in Japan's Kanagawa prefecture, which it bought in 2011 from Japanese supplier Panasonic Corp. That plant has long supplied batteries for Toyota's Prius hybrid.
Last year, Corun started producing nickel-metal hydride batteries in Changsha for the Prius.
Other possible customers include SAIC Motor Corp., Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp., Chery Automobile Co., Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. and Chongqing Changan Automobile Co.
Corun says it is in talks with those automakers to supply batteries for their hybrids.
Corun is listed on the Shanghai stock exchange.
