BYD to build electric bus in Dalian and Nanjing
BYD Co., China's leading electric-vehicle maker, will assemble its K9 electric bus in the northeast China port city of Dalian and the east China city of Nanjing to win local government orders for the vehicle.
Last week, BYD signed an agreement with the Dalian city government to build a plant in the city to assemble the K9. In turn, Dalian will purchase 1,200 electric buses over the next two years, according to the municipality.
Earlier this month, the company signed a similar deal with the Nanjing city government. By promising to build a local assembly plant, BYD has secured an order to deliver 600 K9 buses by June.
BYD, headquartered in the south China city of Shenzhen, currently assembles the K9 in its plant in the central China city of Changsha. The company sells those buses to the cities of Shenzhen and Changsha.
The automaker also has organized test drives and has won tentative procurement agreements with several European and South American cities. BYD assembles the bus in Lancaster, Calif., for a local public transport operator, Long Beach Transit.
BYD, listed in Hong Kong and Shanghai, is partly owned by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffett.
