Volkswagen opens new assembly plant in Ningbo
Volkswagen AG says it has opened a new assembly plant in Ningbo, in southeast China, which will produce up to 300,000 vehicles annually.
The Ningbo plant, will employ 5,700 workers. The facility initially will assemble the Skoda Superb, and will subsequently add other Volkswagen and Skoda vehicles built on the automaker's modular transverse platform.
The facility will be run by VW's joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp., which also has assembly plants in Anting, Nanjing, Yizheng and Urumqi. A sixth assembly plant in Changsha in south central China will be completed in 2015.
Volkswagen also has a joint venture with China FAW Group. The automaker's two Chinese partnerships expect to boost annual production to 4 million vehicles in 2018.
In the first nine months of 2013, Volkswagen sales in China rose 18 percent to 2.36 million units.
