VW group sales in China rise 18% in first 8 months
Volkswagen Group says sales of its various brands in China rose nearly 18 percent in the first eight months to 2.05 million units, edging ahead of General Motors for bragging rights as China's largest foreign automaker.
For the period, GM reported sales of 2,034,771 units.
In the first eight moths, the Volkswagen brand generated sales of 1.56 million units, up 18 percent. The Audi luxury brand reported a sales increase of nearly 20 percent to 310,300 units.
Volkswagen's value brand, Skoda, suffered a sales downturn of 1.9 percent to 156,300 units. But Porsche sales rose 17 percent to 24,638 units, enough to make China the sports car brand's second largest market, behind the United States.
For the month of August, Volkswagen's group sales rose 13 percent year-on-year to 260,000 units, slightly out-performing General Motors. Last month, the American automaker reported sales of 245,799 units.
