Chinese maintain robust exports to Russia

Chinese automakers continue to rack up solid sales gains in Russia despite overall weakness in the country's car and light-truck market, according to the Association of European businesses.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the top-selling Chinese automaker in Russia, sold 2,773 vehicles in July, surging 61 percent from a year earlier. In the first seven months of this year, Geely's Russia sales rose 81 percent to 14,474 units.

Chongqing Lifan Industry Group sold 2,603 units in Russia last month, up 37 percent year-on-year. For the first seven months, Lifan's sales totaled 14,083 units, up 24 percent.

Sales of Great Wall Motor Co., the third-largest Chinese vehicle seller in Russia, jumped 48 percent to 1,708 vehicles. For the first seven months, Great Wall's Russia sales jumped 72 percent year-on-year to 12,122 units.

Chery Automobile Co. ranked fourth with Russian sales of 1,853 vehicles in July, up 8 percent. For the first seven months, Chery's sales rose 12 percent to 11,525 units.

In contrast to the sales growth of Chinese brands, light-vehicle sales in Russia in July dropped 8 percent from a year earlier to 234,569 units. For the January-July period, the sales declined 6 percent year on year to 1,567,892 units.
