Honda, Mazda, Toyota volumes fall
Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. each reported a drop in China sales last month amid signs of lingering anti-Japan sentiment.
Honda and its two local joint ventures sold 51,140 automobiles in China in July, down 2 percent from a year earlier, the Japanese automaker said.
That follows a 6 percent year-on-year decline in June and a 5 percent gain in May.
The data suggests that Honda and other major Japanese automakers are slowly recovering from the sales crisis triggered by a row between Beijing and Tokyo over disputed islands in the East China Sea.
In the first seven months of this year, Honda sold 367,718 vehicles, down 3 percent. Honda makes vehicles in China in partnership with Dongfeng Motor Group and Guangzhou Automobile Group.
Mazda Motor Corp.'s joint ventures sold 11,678 automobiles in China in July, down 19 percent. That follows a 31 percent year-on-year decline in June and a 12 percent fall in May.
In the first seven months, Mazda sold 94,209 vehicles, down 20 percent.
Mazda makes cars in China in partnership with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. It also has a sales venture with FAW Group.
Toyota's two local joint ventures sold 75,600 automobiles in China in July, down 4 percent. That followed a 9 percent year-on-year increase in June and a 0.3 percent rise in May.
In the first seven months of this year, through the end of July, Toyota sold about 492,500 vehicles, down 5 percent from a year earlier.
Despite soft sales in July, Toyota aims to sell 900,000 vehicles in China this year, up 7 percent year-on-year.
