VW-brand China sales rise 12.9% in March

Volkswagen-brand sales in China increased 12.9 percent to 206,800 units in March, cementing China's status as the automaker's key growth market.

For the first three months of 2013, VW's China sales jumped 30.6 percent to 392,300 units.

Porsche, the automaker's sports-car unit, said March sales in China rose 17.9 percent year-on-year to 3,032 units.

The Cayenne traditionally has been Porsche's big seller in the SUV-crazy Chinese market. But sales of its rear- and mid-engine models -- the Boxster, Cayman and 911 -- jumped by a third in the first quarter.

In a sign of China's importance to Porsche, the German automaker has scheduled the world premiere of its plug-in hybrid powered Panamera for the Shanghai auto show on April 21.

Bentley, the German automaker's UK-based ultra-luxury brand, reported that sales in China fell 18 percent to 474 units in the first three months.

Bentley says Chinese customers are waiting for the debut of the new Flying Spur, Bentley's top-selling model in China, which goes on sale this summer.

Earlier, Audi AG announced that it's China sales rose 11 percent to 34,864 units in March, led by strong sales of its long-wheelbase A6 sedan.

Volkswagen's other brands in China, Skoda and Seat, have not yet announced March sales results.
