Shanghai Stock Exchange Selects SkyStream For Global Delivery Of News

China's largest exchange is using its Mediaplex-20 video headend to distribute financial and market information - including listings, securities trading, commodities and financial news channels

SkyStream has announced the Shanghai Stock Exchange, China's largest exchange, is using its Mediaplex-20 video headend to distribute financial and market information - including listings, securities trading, commodities and financial news channels - to investors around the globe.

The 15-year-old stock exchange, which counted more than 1,000 listed companies in 2005, chose Shanghai Gaozhi Technology as its integrator and customer service provider. Shanghai Gaozhi deployed a fully redundant, disaster recovery-enabled headend, formed by two Mediaplex-20 chassis.

The Mediaplex-20 headends deliver MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video, data and audio around the world over the Shanghai Stock Communication's VSAT network. The information is delivered in real time to brokers and company offices, as well as the stock exchange's 3,800 one-way satellite stations and 1,100 two-way satellite stations.

The Shanghai Stock Exchange is delivering this MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 content over IP over DVB-S, a unique application that required equipment flexible enough to meet its needs.

"The reliability and video quality provided by the Mediaplex-20 have fully met the stock exchange's requirements for a fault-tolerant video headend with built-in forward error correction, IP Mux, IP Tunneling and IP encapsulation capabilities, which ensure the reliable delivery of massive volumes of real-time data and video without packet loss," said Mr. Liu Xing-Xie, CEO of Shanghai Gaozhi. "SkyStream's video and data transmission over satellite DVB platforms is extremely reliable."

The Shanghai Stock Exchange, founded in 1990, is developing Shanghai into a world-class international financial center with a market capitalization approaching 3 trillion yuan (RMB). Among its chief goals is to create an open, efficient and transparent marketplace for trading and securities information, including innovative use of video channels on financial and company news to expand the quality of information available to investors.

Additionally, Shanghai Stock Exchange has set the ambitious goal of providing extensive educational and research services to investors, including instruction on performing online data analysis, trading education by stock brokers and information on the use of histograms and charting.

"Guaranteed uptime and reliability are the Shanghai Stock Exchange's highest priorities," said Andy Lovit, vice president of worldwide field operations for SkyStream.

"Shanghai Gaozhi's years of experience in satellite networking have enabled it to implement a failsafe, redundant architecture that ensures the network is always up and running. Our delivery platforms help the Shanghai Stock Exchange differentiate its services available to investors through cutting-edge technology like broadcast-quality corporate video and instantaneous information on millions of transactions per second."
