BMW China sales jump 73% in December, but Audi maintains lead

BMW Group said sales of its cars and SUVs in China rose 73 percent in December to 30,470 vehicles.

Sales of BMW-brand vehicles increased 72 percent to 28,184 units, while deliveries of Mini-brand vehicles surged 96 percent to 2,286 units, spokeswoman Linda Croissant said on Tuesday.

In November, BMW Group reported a sales leap of 62 percent to 31,090 units, which the automaker said was due to strong demand for its X1 small SUV and 3 series long-wheelbase models.

For the full year, group sales in China rose 40 percent to 326,444 vehicles, BMW said.

Despite the automaker's hot sales, BMW remains well behind Audi AG, whose sales jumped 30 percent last year to 405,838 units. In third place is Mercedes-Benz, whose China sales rose 1.5 percent last year to 196,211 units.

All three German automakers are adding models and expanding production in China's luxury market, which continues to grow faster than overall industry sales.
