Taiwanese EMS sector to benefit from fierce tablet competition in Q4

With tablet PC competition to heat up in the fourth quarter of the year, when more blockbuster models will land in the consumer market, Taiwanese electronic contract manufacturers involved in tablet PC production will benefit from the coming boom.

The global market for tablet PCs is believed to see increasing competition in the fourth quarter, as four IT and software giants, namely Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft are poised to launch their newest models to square off against each others in the landscape during the year-end sales season.

Apple, in addition to its hot-selling iPad series, will also bring its iPad Mini to the market, and is forecast by International Data Corp. (IDC), a global market researcher, to attain total tablet PC sales of between 18 million and 20 million units in the quarter. In the meantime, Google with Nexus 7 and Amazon with new-edition Kindle Fire are estimated to sell 2-3 million and 3-4 million units, respectively.

Despite a newcomer, Microsoft will launch its Surface RT and Surface Pro at the end of October along with its newest PC operating system, Windows 8, and hence is predicted by IDC to make an impressive debut in the marketplace with sales of 2-3 million units in the quarter.

IDC pointed out that with high brand recognition and strong competitiveness on software, the four heavyweights are expected to contribute a total of 25-30 million units to the global sales of tablet PCs during the period. The estimated sales volume is significantly huge, compared to a total of only 25 million units sold by all vendors worldwide in the second quarter of the year.

In the face of more players joining the competition, Taiwanese electronic contract manufacturers participating in tablet PC manufacturing are very likely to enjoy explosive orders in the months to come.

These beneficiary companies include Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Quanta Computer Inc. and Pegatron Corp. (assembly), TPK Holdings Ltd. (touch panels), Simplo Technology Co. and Dynapack International Technology Corp. (battery modules), and Foxconn Technology Co. and Catcher Technology Co. (PC housings).
