Toyota to build CVTs at 1.8 billion yuan plant
Toyota Motor Corp. will start producing continuously variable transmissions in China in 2014 for locally produced vehicles.
Construction of a $285 million (1.8 billion yuan) transmission plant began this week in Changshu in east China's Jiangsu province.
The plant is scheduled to begin output in September 2014 with initial production capacity of 240,000 transmissions a year.
The gearbox will be used in vehicles with small engines to improve driving performance and fuel economy, Toyota said in a statement.
The plant is located two kilometers northwest of Toyota's R&D center, which is under construction in Changshu.
Toyota, which has two joint ventures in China, sold 442,557 vehicles in the country in the first half of this year. That's up 31 percent from the same period last year, according to LMC Automotive.
