Chery exports jump 42%, top 20,000 in May

Chery Automobile Co., China's largest vehicle exporter, sold 20,093 vehicles overseas in May, up more than 42 percent year-on-year.

This was the first time the company's monthly exports exceeded 20,000 units, company spokesman Jin Yibo said.

The figure also brought Chery's total exports in the first five months of this year to 72,792 units.

The Chery Tiggo SUV and the Chery A3 and Fulwin compact cars account for more than 70 percent of Chery's exports. Chery, of Wuhu in east China's Anhui province, aims to export more than 170,000 vehicles this year.

The company has built 16 plants in other developing countries assembling vehicles with semi-knockdown kits and complete knockdown kits from China.

Now Chery is building an assembly plant in Brazil, and it also plans to build a CKD plant in Vietnam.

Chery has yet to disclose its domestic sales on the domestic for May. In sharp contrast to its robust export growth, Chery's domestic sales have been weak.

Dragged down by a soft market in China, Chery's sales dropped 19 percent year-on-year to 186,085 units in the first four months of this year, according to LMC Automotive.
