Huawei Aims To Ship 60 Million Smartphones In 2012

Yu Chengdong, chairman for Huawei Device, said that the company is planning to ship 60 million smartphones in 2012.

This figure will triple its smartphone shipment growth compared with last year. Yu made the statement during the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain.

The company also formally launched its first quad-core smartphone named Ascend D, which claims to be the world's fastest smartphone. The new product adopts Huawei's own K3V2 processor, a quad-core 1.2GHz/1.5GHz CPU, the Android 4.0 system, a 4.5-inch HD screen, a 8-million pixel camera, Dolby 5.1 surround sound, a 1,800mAh battery, and a 8.9mm super-slim frame.

For network availability, Huawei's Ascend D will first support UMTS; and the LTE version, covering TD-SCMDA, TD-LTE and FDD-LTE, will be launched in the third or fourth quarter of this year. The new product is expected to be put in the markets of America, Asia, Europe, and Australia in the second quarter of 2012; and both black and white versions are available.

Yu said that with the expected 60 million smartphone shipment, Huawei will challenge the dominant positions of Apple and Nokia in the smartphone market. He also revealed that for the year 2012, 30% to 40% of Huawei smartphones will target the domestic Chinese market.
