VW Jan. sales fall 9% due to Chinese New Year
Volkswagen brand sales in China declined nearly 9 percent year-on-year in January to 159,900 units as the weeklong Chinese New Year festival shortened the buying period.
Other mass-market automakers such as General Motors and Ford also reported lower sales in January. But VW actually outperformed overall industry sales, which slumped 24 percent.
And VW's Audi AG, also outperformed the market. Earlier, the German luxury brand reported January sales jumped nearly 23 percent to 27,206 units -- evidence that China's luxury market is still hot.
China remains Volkswagen's largest market. Last year, VW brand sales in China jumped 18 percent to nearly 1.8 million units.
