Shanghai GM's January sales drop 4%

Shanghai General Motors says its sales slid 4 percent year-on-year in January to 127,443 vehicles as Chevrolet sales weakened.

Shanghai GM, a 49-51 joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motors, markets the Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac brands.

Chevrolet sales declined 10.7 percent year-on-year to 53,400 units in January, according to the company.

Buick sales edged up 0.9 percent to 71,056 units, and Cadillac sales rose 18 percent to 2,987 units.

Sales weakened a bit in January after fairly strong results last year. GM's various Chinese joint ventures sold nearly 2.6 million units in 2011, up 8.3 percent.
