Shenzhen to buy 2,000 EVs, hybrids this year
The municipality of Shenzhen plans to buy 500 electric taxis and 1,500 electric buses this year, reports the Xinhua news service, citing a government official.
The acquisitions will raise the city's fleet of EVs and hybrids to 5,000 vehicles, Shenzhen Mayor Xu Qin said during a conference.
Shenzhen is one of five cities where the central government offers subsidies of 60,000 yuan ($9,500) to EV purchasers, and 50,000 yuan to purchasers of plug-in hybrids.
Shenzhen, which is located in southeast China's Guangdong province, offers a matching subsidy.
In 2010, the city announced plans to amass a fleet of 35,000 EVs within three years.
Shenzhen also is the home town of BYD Co., which markets electric buses and the e6 electric car. BYD has supplied a small fleet of electric taxis to the city.
